It's that time of year again...Derby Time!!
(Insert screaming drunk college students, screaming drunk celebrities, screaming drunk socialites...you get the picture, right?)
Sadly, we are not having a Derby Party this year.
(moment of silence)
Drew and I talked about having one about a month ago...I even talked to some of my friends about what they would bring...and then suddenly it was the week before Derby Day and we hadn't planned one darn thing! Oh Well...most people wouldn't have been able to come anyway - seems to be a busy time of year. But I still plan on watching the Derby and all the surrounding festivities.
(It's this time of year that I REALLY miss being in Kentucky. There is just such a bond all across the state the first Saturday in May. We are Kentucky and we are Proud!)
So even though there's no party, I still want to make my Derby picks. And, as you all know, I certainly do NOT pick my winners on statistics...that's crazy talk! I pick them by silk colors/design and name.
(Let me vent for a second...the stupid KY Derby site won't let me copy or save pics of the silks, so I have to just send you to their link...which is, I'm sure, exactly what they were hoping people like me would do. Stupid KY Derby Site! Hmmm...where'd all my KY Spirit go? Blah. Whatever.)
**If I were picking on name alone, I would choose:
Eight Belles...because...well...I like to call myself a southern belle.
(Though I also kinda like Cowboy Cal, Big Truck, and the Off-the-Trail Into Mischief)
**If I were picking on silks alone, I would choose:
Behindatthebar (another Off-the-Trail-er) - I think I would like the name better if it were Behindthebar
But, to choose a horse whose silks I like and name I like, I'm gonna have to go, again, with:
Eight Belles
And that makes Eight Belles my clear pick. Have you looked at her odds? Not the best...though if she won (and I actually put money on her) I'd be rakin' in the cash!
So...who is "the pick" this year? Seems the Louisville Courier Journal is pointing towards Big Brown. Eh. He ain't bad. Not that great a name (sounds like something a three year old would name their teddy bear)...and only okay silks. We'll see I guess.
And speaking of horse racing...I know that Keeneland's seasonal run officially ended late April, but I just can't stop seeing dresses around town and calling them Keeneland dresses. My favorite comes from Gap.
(Gap's site is down so I can't get the picture. What is UP with the internet tonight??? It is going to great lengths to keep me from posting a few of my favorite things...Julie Andrews would be so sad. I'll post it when the stupid site is back up and running. UPDATE: They now have the site up, but my dress isn't there. Grrrr!)
I drool over the dress when I see in-store and I dream about it at night.
I. Want. The. Keeneland. Dress.
Okay...enough about my shopping obsession. Just promise me that you guys will watch the Derby tomorrow! I'm not asking too much...it's only 2 minutes...but it's the greatest 2 minutes in sports.

Great Blog. Bad day today for the races though. Raining for two days, high of only 70 degrees. We are headed to the yearly Marty and Sue Derby Party in Louiville. Will let you know how much we win -more like we loose.
Sounds like a miserable day for the Derby. What a bummer!
I miss the Derby party. :( Boo!
I missed it too. I came upon me so suddenly (it felt earlier this year). And I am sad for Eight Belles.
All the talk around here this weekend was about Cinco de Mayo. Not quite as fun.
I miss Kentucky Greatly especially this time of year!
I hear ya on the derby coming on suddenly...I would swear to you that's it's still March! : )
Cinco de Mayo was HUGE in my tiny little town...it's about the only thing they celebrate here. Nobody even knows the KY Derby is going on. My friend Chris said her pastor was talking about Eight Belles in church the next day...and no one even knew what he was talking about! Crazy!!
I'm yearnin' for some Kentucky!!!
