1:10pm (pst): Why oh WHY is Access Hollywood doing the Derby coverage?? The Derby is classy...Access Hollywood (and Billy Bush esp.) is TACKY! Blech. I'm so annoyed by "seeing the celebrities"...normally this pre-race coverage is telling the history of the Derby and sharing stories about the horse owners, the horses themselves, etc. THAT'S what I want to see when I watch Derby coverage...not annoying celebrities (like Heidi and Spencer). Has the Derby completely sold out??
1:16: When Paul Azinger was speaking, I looked behind him and saw the room he was standing in and realized...Hey! I've been there! Okay, so it's probably not the exact same box, but I was so excited to see one of the boxes I've been to at Churchill Downs. I'm so easily amused.
1:20: FINALLY! We're talking horses!!
1:21: Tom Durkin was HILARIOUS in his description of how he watches and calls the race. I esp. liked his coat hanger paper holder. Very state of the art.
1:27: Hugh Hefner is SO OLD!!!!!!! Seriously.
1:32: Greg Grunberg seems like the most awesome normal person. We should hang out!
1:37: Bobby Flay vs. a local southern lady at Wagner's? Like it was even a competition!
1:43: The Office on The Kentucky Derby? Andy got it right. "The Derby is the sport of Kings. The nobility of it all..."
1:47: "Do you know the story of Big Brown?" I keep hearing this question...and my answer is NO because THIS time is where they're supposed to be telling this, not asking Molly Sims who designed her dress!!
1:52 There was a tornado watch at first?? Holy Cow! People don't care...rain or shine they are at the Derby!!
**This has NOTHING to do with the Derby, but have you seen the Celtic Thunder commercial? One of them is like 7. One looks like he should belong to Thunder Cats. Ewww...it's so awful. Best part of the commercial (minus when it ended)? When they show a girl crying. They're trying to say she was brought to tears by the singing...when really she's just mad at her mom for dragging her to this lame show instead of the sleepover at her BFF's house.**
2:00: I just realized that to skip all this Hollywood Derby crap, I should just turn on ESPN. Drew says, "We don't get ESPN." "Yes, we do...we just never scroll past those channels," I say. "It's a sad day that YOU know we have ESPN and I don't." Poor Drew.
We put up the guide for ESPN and they say the horse racing goes off at 2:00. WHAT?? The race doesn't even happen till 2:00. So we're still on NBC...oh well. At least they've finally gotten to some REAL Derby commentary...stories on the horses, stories on Wagner's, stories on the jockeys...
Ahhhh...it finally, truly feels like Derby Day -
Bob Costas is commentating. Now THAT'S Derby Day!
Though, I haven't had a drink today...no Bourbon Slush, no Mint Julep...
I'm sober on Derby Day? What the heck??

2:09: "If you can do it, it ain't braggin'" - Muhammad Ali
2:10: There's a lot of trash-talkin' going on within the horse community. "Where I come from, when a man makes statements like that, he gets his butt kicked." Yeah. I'm sure he said 'butt.'
2:11: I love that the jockeys are playing pool beforehand. Great way to blow off some steam.
2:17: I just entered the Lucky U contest about 5 times. Do I want to win? Hell Yeah!
2:28: I love when they do the Hat Parade.
2:38: Those horse owners sure are classy. Only, I don't think Big Brown's guy (his trainer? his owner?) is very classy...in fact I think he's kind of a jerk. Hmmm...
2:39: I love watching the horses as they come out..they are just SO EXCITED. Lemme go...I wanna race...Lemme go...I wanna race....
2:40: How pretty is Eight Belles? She's GORGEOUS!! And so trendy, too, with her white and red sport socks!
2:51: Eight Belles jockey looks a little cocky. But that's alright. He's gonna win on that filly!
3:00: "My Old Kentucky Home"...sing along...you know the words! Oh, the sun shines bright on my old Kentucky Home...
I was forced to learn that song in 4th grade...as well as the Nation Anthem. I still know them today.
3:13: They are loading them in the gate!! Eeek! I'm so excited!!!

AND THEY'RE OFF!!!!!!!!!!!
GO GO GO! GO EIGHT BELLES GO!!!
Man! THAT was a great race!! Did You SEE Eight Belles??? She did so good!!!! Hey...Second Place is still good!!
But what's happening with the poor horse that's passed out on the field?? I kinda don't care about the winner right now... Is the horse okay??? Oh My Gosh!! It's Eight Belles!!! IS SHE OKAY???
We just got word on Eight Belles... She broke both front ankles and will immediately be euthanized. I am a little bit teary. Poor Eight Belles... What a very sad way to end Derby Day.
It's probably better we didn't have a party...I don't need to have a bunch of people see me cry over a horse I didn't even know.

They shot your horse. It's Alpo comin' down the stretch.... followed by Elmer's..... Kibbles is in a neck and kneck race for third with Bits.... and Krazy just can't seem to keep up. Glue and Dog Food....get it?
oh, oh, oh, abbey. what a heartbreak. i changed the channel before it happened, and just read the news - what sadness. i'm going to pick up Flora and hug her tight.
I cried, too, and so did many of the people we were with at the party. The trainer was crying and I thought, how horrible, he won the Oaks race yesterday and what a happy day for him. Then he sees his best filly come in second in the Derby and his heart had to be flying, and then TWO SECONDs later, she's down on the track. What a tragedy! It put a very sad end to a wonderful day.
Crying with you,
Aunt Adele
#1 your friend "cr8on" is very mean!! Boo! Bad form!
#2 I think what was even more sad was that I knew the outcome and then read your blog and I wanted to tell you while I was reading it.
Shame on you, Creighton! Have you no heart? Let us women weep over the loss of a great lady who died giving it her all.
It was a classic Derby - plentiful sunshine, good fun with friends. The Derby tugs at a Kentuckian's heart even without a sad ending.
Sorry... had a bit to drink yesterday...was feelin' a bit saucy...I concede, very bad form. Apologies all around.
Creighton is terrible!
I totally forgot yesterday was Derby Day (I'm a bad Kentuckian), and didn't remember until I called mom and dad and they weren't home, and then I realized it was the first Sat. in May and that they had to be at Sue's.
I was test driving cars yesterday, and I'm totally going to be a biter and get the Mazda3, I loved that thing! Plus the salesman was nice and not pushy and that always helps.
Love you!
I was SO entertained by the comments...esp. Creighton's and all of the Creighton Haters. : ) hahahah
Creighton - Drew and I actually laughed pretty hard when we read your comment! And Drew said he would have said that totally sober...so no shame!!
Mom, Aunt Adele, Sarah, and Chris: Thanks for all the crying support! I felt so silly for being so upset, but it's good to know that others felt the same way!
Christen - I'm surprised that you weren't expecting that comment from Creighton...come on...you've known him for over a decade! : )
You are gonna LOOOVE your Mazda 3!! Bonus about the Mazda is that you can really get all the "extras" and it's still a decent price!!
Bad Creighton, but it was funny.
I'm sorry (Creighton, Drew, and Gary), but I don't think there's anything the least bit funny about a horse breaking its front ankles and having to be put down. What if it had been your pet? Men!
